We get a lot of questions and emails from consumers asking which action camera they should buy. Here are three things all consumers should consider before pulling the trigger on an action camera.
Older Action Cameras
If you are going to be using an action camera to film family holidays, vacations, children’s sports games, hikes, etc. – Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on an older version or model. You most likely won’t need all the features on the latest GoPro or Garmin action cameras such as 4K shots, image stabilization or voice commands. The older versions (i.e. GoPro Hero Session, GoPro Hero4 Silver, Garmin VIRB XE) will get the job done and save you a lot of money in the process. See Action Cameras on Amazon –>
Look for Bundles
If you’re dead set on buying the latest action cameras on the market, make sure you look for bundles. A lot of times with recently released products, the brand or manufacturer won’t allow retailers to discount the product by itself but they will allow the retailers to bundle the product with other gear and accessories. For example, a lot of times there are bundles available where you might get a free microSD or mount included with purchase, which in the big picture can be considered savings as most people will almost always buy these accessories anyways.
No External Housing Unit Needed
We recommend staying away from action cameras that require an external housing unit in water shots and environments. Today, there a lot of action cameras available that are waterproof out of the box. With these cameras, you won’t need to carry around extra accessories and the audio/visual quality is much better as you won’t need to worry about condensation or fog building up.
