Bear Mattress vs Purple Mattress Review Comparison
Two of the Best in a Direct-To-Consumer Mattress Comparison
Alright, so before we get into the weeds with this Purple vs Bear Mattress buying guide, we should cover the major items that you’ll get with both mattresses, regardless of mattress size. Both brands offer an amazing value proposition, which is why people are starting to warm up big time to the ‘bed in a box’ concept. Bear and Purple offer a 100-night risk-free trial where you can basically test the mattress for 99 nights and if you don’t like it for any reason you can return it at no extra cost to you. Additionally, shipping is free and the warranty is 10 years…they both stand behind their product. With that said, there is a noticeable difference between them in terms of feel and price. We’ll cover both and more.
Bear Mattress is the mattress that Jeff has used for the past 18 months. He really likes it and has very few complaints with Bear. Still, here’s the breakdown with Bear Mattress.
Bear Mattress Bed Materials
The Bear mattress is made of four different layers of foam, in varying sizes. On the bottom you have a high-density base layer for support. Next is two layers of responsive foam, which is similar to memory foam. The last, top layer is a graphite-infused foam material that is designed to allow the mattress to breath better. If you’ve seen our Leesa Mattress vs Casper Mattress Buyer Guide, we mentioned a similar concept at the top of both of those mattresses as well.
Essentially, memory foam like mattresses don’t tend to breath well and, as a result, the user gets hot. Leesa, Casper, and Bear—with it’s graphite-infused top layer—is attempting to mitigate this and we think Bear does a good job here. The mattress doesn’t get too warm, especially compared to traditional memory foam mattresses and is comfortable to sleep on in most temperatures. It also stays cool throughout the night rather than heating up after a few hours.
Bear brings everything together with its Celliant cover, which is designed to help increase circulation and aid in muscle recovery. Bear mostly targets athletes with their mattresses and therefore things like muscle recovery, oxygen levels, and circulation are points of differentiation. We don’t have much to say here. Bear says the mattress helps with this stuff, but we can’t really confirm. The mattress is comfy, that’s all we know.
Celliant is, however, recognized by the FDA as meeting the criteria of a wellness product and is clinically proven to help with energy, recovery and comfort.
Rating Bear Mattress with Firmness & Motion Transfer
The Bear Mattress might be the most firm mattress that we’ve tested lately. In our 6-product mattress roundup video, we said Bear was a 6/10 in terms of firmness, meaning it’s not super soft, nor is it too firm. It supports well and does break in over time. That’s one point of contrast between Bear and Purple. Bear actually gets softer over time and you will need to make sure to rotate the mattress occasionally, but Purple never seems to show a body impression. More on that in a bit.
We feel Bear is mattress better suited for back and stomach sleepers in particular. It’s on the firm end of the spectrum and will support you very well in those two sleeping positions. For side sleepers, you may actually prefer a bed that is softer such as Purple or Casper. Bear might even be too firm for combo sleepers as well, at least form the get go. It does soften up over time, but it’s quite firm initially. If you’re a back/stomach sleeper, however, Bear is a good option for sure.
Bear feels like a memory foam mattress in that it doesn’t immediately give—you will sink into the mattress, but it does cradle your body well. If you like the memory foam feel, Bear is the way to go, but just be mindful that the mattress you test today is not exactly the feel you’ll have later. In fact, Jeff’s Bear Mattress is more comfortable than a brand new one since he’s broken it in quite a bit.
In terms of motion transfer, Bear is fantastic and among the best mattresses out there for this. We weren’t able to knock over a beer can on the other side of the mattress even though we were essentially jogging in place. In fact, of all the brands out there, the beer probably moved the least with Bear. If you’re looking for limited motion transfer, it’s hard to do better than Bear Mattress. If you move around a lot in your sleep, Bear helps regulate how much you will disrupt your partner. Of course, that is mostly due to the memory foam-like feel and firmness, so there is a trade off.
Bear Mattress Coupon Code & Price
Bear offers a very affordable mattress, even compared to its peers. All Bear mattresses are under $1,000.
And the other really nice thing about Bear is you can typically find a Bear Mattress promo code to layer on top to increase your savings. In fact, you can get $50 off all Bear Mattresses with code RIZ50 at checkout. Before the discount, pricing is in line with most major brands and even cheaper than some of the more well known companies. After the discount, typically Bear is one of the cheaper premium online mattresses that you can find. Bear also has a system setup so you can finance a mattress as well.
Bear Mattress Review – Closing Arguments
We really like Bear Mattress and you will probably also, if you want the memory foam-like feel and if you want your mattress to get even more comfortable over time. Bear is affordable and offers a consumer-friendly shipping and return policy so if you’re interested there’s very little risk in trying the mattress out for 99 nights.
If we do have one minor complaint with Bear it’s that the standard mattress cover is not intended to be removed and should not be put in the washing machine, which is unfortunate. As a result, you’re instructed to hand wash the mattresses topper. Not the end of the world, but if you’re getting this for a younger person (or very old one…or heck, a college student even), you may look into the Bear Protector, which is breathable cover that also happens to be 100% waterproof to ward off stains and damage from liquids. Of course, you could look for a 3rd-party mattress pad or protector on Amazon, which may save you some money since the Bear Protector ranges from $75 to $125, depending on the size of the mattress.
Is Bear the best online mattress brand? We can’t confirm or deny, but we can say that they are definitely in the top tier, despite being lesser known. Does Bear make better mattresses for athletes? We have no idea. Seems to us that getting good sleep in general is the most important thing for an athlete. You can certainly get good sleep on other mattresses as well. Bottom line with Bear is that they make a really good mattress.
Purple is certainly better known than Bear and has a much different feel. In fact, Purple started with a Kickstarter campaign, promising a better mattress at an affordable price. And the better mattress that they envisioned was unlike anything else on the market. It is quite different, but in a good way.
Design of Purple Mattress
Purple, at the base, starts off with a 4″ layer of support foam, followed by a 3.5″ thick layer of polyurethane foam and on top is 2 inches of Purple’s proprietary hyper-elastic polymer. Purple makes sure to note that it’s not gel, but that’s easiest comparison we can make, although it still is different than gel. It reacts almost immediately to pressure. It sinks in when you press or lay on it and snaps back when you remove yourself. It is supposed to be pressure relieving and supportive at the same time.
Above is a picture of the hyper-elastic polymer. It stretches, molds, bends, and shapes itself to whatever is on it without disrupting the rest of the grid. And it feels nothing like a traditional memory foam mattress. Nevertheless, it’s crazy comfortable and indeed does a fantastic job of supporting you and offering pressure relief. It’s unlike anything you’ve tried. But that does mean there is some getting used to it since you can feel yourself displacing and moving around the polymer grid. Not a bad thing, just different.
Beyond comfort, the grid also helps with airflow. This is one of the coolest—if not the coolest—mattresses we’ve tested out. Cocoon Chill by Sealy is the other mattress that regulates heat abnormally well. Because Purple isn’t using a foam layer at the top it means the airflow is improved and heat dissipates better…and yes, even better than with a Bear mattress.
Purple Bed – Comfort, Motion Transfer & Firmness
We covered a lot of this above, but here’s a little more. As far as comfort goes, Purple is stellar. It’s so nice to sleep on, but as previously mentioned, it’s just a different feel. In terms of motion transfer, it’s far less than you’d expect. Our initial thought was that Purple would have a good amount of motion transfer, but that’s not the case. Motion transfer is very limited.
In terms of firmness, Purple is a 4.5/10, meaning it’s on the softer end, but definitely not too soft. Purple has built their brand around being perfectly in between. This is a fantastic mattress for side sleepers, back/stomach sleepers, and combo sleepers alike. There are few mattresses that can accomodate all of those sleeping positions equally. If you haven’t seen it already, their raw egg test video went viral and it’s all about not being firm or soft…it’s about being both, at the same time.
We’ve actually seen a few people online replicate Purple’s egg test without the egg cracking…pretty remarkable. The Purple grid really does do a good job of absorbing yet supporting.
Purple Mattress Coupon Code & Price
Of all the online mattress brands, Purple seems the most stingy with coupon codes. We haven’t seen a Purple Mattress promo code in a while, however, we did see them drop prices to make things universally more affordable. You can check here on Purple’s website for any current promotions. Typically around major holidays you’ll see the best deals and promotions.
As you can see, Purple is markedly more expensive than Bear for a mattress. The best way that we’ve seen to save money on Purple mattresses is to get a bundle, however, you will end up spending more in terms of absolute dollars, just getting a better deal overall – Check Purple’s website for current bundles.
Purple Mattress Review – Closing Arguments
We are truly enamored with this bed. It’s comfortable, supportive, soft, and responsive…and cool! That might be our favorite thing about Purple, that it’s a great blend of supportiveness and softness, yet cool even when it’s hot out. Beyond that, the price for a mattress is on the higher end for an internet-ordered mattress. Still very affordable compared to premium mattresses purchased at a brick and mortar retail store.
It’s between 7% and 37% more expensive than Bear, depending on the size you go with. Like is the case with the Bear cover, the Purple cover can be removed, but Purple recommends that you do not machine wash it and instead only spot clean it where necessary. Purple also sells their own Purple Mattress Protector, which is $49 to $69. At the end of the day, we really like this mattress. If you want something cool and very comfortable and you’re not super price conscious, Purple is a good option for sure.
