Jaybird X4 vs Apple AirPods Wireless Headphones Review
See which wireless headphones are right for you in this Apple AirPods vs Jaybird X4 comparison
Wireless headphones are everywhere these days. If you’re still using wired headphones, you’re a loser…just kidding. Jeff actually still uses wired headphones while he’s working. Still, it might be time for you to upgrade to a pair of wireless earbuds.
In this post, we compare two of the most popular wireless headphones on the market, the Jaybird X4 and the Apple AirPods. Before we jump into the meat and potatoes of the review though, it’s important to note the primary difference between these two headphones.
Jeff is a big fan of Jaybird headphones
The Apple AirPods are completely wireless (i.e. there’s no wire that connects them). They’re literally just two small earbuds. The X4, on the other hand, are called wireless headphones but technically a wire connects the two earbuds. Still, they connect to your device via Bluetooth (in other words you don’t plug them into your phone or anything).
With that in mind, let start with the advantages that the Jaybird X4s have over the Apple AirPods.
Better Audio Quality
The Jaybird X4 headphones provide excellent audio. Jeff, who is the audio snob on the RIZKNOWS team, raves about it. The headphones have solid lows, mids and highs and pretty good bass. Overall, the sound is just very crisp and clear.
The Apple AirPods, on the other hand, have just average audio quality, which isn’t a big surprise. After all, they basically just have the same audio as the Apple EarPods (you know the ones the come standard when you buy a new iPhone).
What’s also cool about the X4s is that you can customize the sound via the Jaybird MySound app. Within the app you can actually adjust the EQ settings to match your exact sound preferences. So if you’re a big Lil’ Wayne fan, you can turn up the bass and really rock out.
Customize the X4s to your exact sound preferences
Also, when you change the EQ settings within the app, you’re actually changing the firmware of the headphones. That way when you go to switch devices, your personalized settings will carry over.
Alternatively, if you don’t feel like creating your own sound profile, you can just browse the profiles of popular celebrities within the MySound app and more or less steal their customized settings.
The X4s are a little newer (released in August 2018) so you won’t see them discounted right away. However, after about six months, we wouldn’t be surprised to occasionally see them on sale for about $100. It might be a good idea to check the current price of the X4s on Amazon.
Better For Working Out
The Jaybird X4s are better than the Apple AirPods for working out and running for three primary reasons.
First, they have a more secure fit. You can wiggle, shake and move your head as vigorously as you want and the X4s will not fall out. You can’t say the same about the Apple AirPods.
Second, the X4s have better sound isolation. Jeff, who was wearing the X4s, couldn’t even hear Matt who was talking in a normal voice about five feet away. This is great for people who just want to zone out and not be bothered when they’re at the gym or in the office.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the X4s are IPX7 rated, meaning the headphones can be submerged in water down to 1 meter for up to 3 minutes. The AirPods, on the other hand, technically don’t have a rating. As such, the X4s are just better equipped to handle sweat and water as you work out.
With that said, it’s worth noting that Matt has used the Apple AirPods almost everyday in the gym for the past six months and never had any issues. He even says the earbuds stay in his ears surprisingly well when he’s doing cardio.
More Fit Options
The X4s also give you more options in how you can wear the headphones. They can be worn in under-ear or over-ear positions. Plus, they come with different size Comply foam ear tips, which Jeff really likes, as well as different size ear fins.
Lastly, the Jaybird X4s also get the edge when it comes to track management and volume control. The headphones come equipped with a full remote that has three buttons. Using the remote you can easily pause/play, control volume, skip tracks and access Siri or Google Assistant.
The Apple AirPods obviously don’t have a remote (they’re true wireless earbuds) or any buttons for that matter. Instead, you have to use a series of tapping gestures, which can be a little finicky and annoying.
Wow, if you read the top section, you may have noticed the Jaybird X4s have several major advantages. Don’t write off the Apple AirPods just yet though. They have a couple advantages of their own.
Battery Life (Sort Of)
This is a somewhat tricky subject but we’ll do our best to explain.
Technically, the X4s have better battery life when it comes to the actual headphones (or earbuds). With the X4s, expect to get around nine hours of playback before you have the charge them again. For comparison purposes, the Apple AirPods offer about five hours of battery life.
However, before you call it, you have take into account the complete picture. The AirPods come with a nifty, portable charging case that provides an additional 24 hours worth of juice. Therefore, the AirPods really have about 30 hours of total battery life before you have to charge up the portable case again.

Plus, the AirPods have a better quick-charge feature. Pop the AirPods into the charging case for 15 minutes and you’ll get around three hours worth of playback. Compare that to the X4s, which provide an hour worth of juice on a 10 minute charge.
Lastly, we don’t like that the X4s charge via a proprietary cable. This can be a pain if you’re traveling or you’re out and about and forget to bring the cable. The AirPods charge via a lightning cable, which let’s face it are everywhere these days.
There’s also something to be said about pure convenience. As we mentioned at the top of this review, the AirPods are truly wireless. There’s absolutely no cord, which can be a liberating feeling.
Don’t believe me? Ask a friend or family member if you can try their true wireless earbuds for five minutes. There’s a good chance you’ll never want to go back to the dark side (cord life).
Regardless of the lack of cord, the AirPods are also just super convenient for iOS users. First, the setup process is super easy. All you have to do is enable Bluetooth on your device, pop open the charging case and you’ll automatically be prompted to pair the earbuds.

Then from that point, every time you pop open the case the earbuds will automatically pair with your device again. What’s also nice is that the earbuds will be recognized by your other iCloud devices, which makes it super easy to switch between your phone, Macbook, etc.
Jaybird X4 vs AirPods Review Verdict
You made it through the long, arduous journey of a RIZKNOWS comparison. Thanks for sticking with us. In our eyes, the decision between the AirPods and X4s come to down a few primary factors.
The first is audio quality. If you’re an audiophile, go with the X4s. They have better audio quality and more flexibility within the MySound app.
Next, do you plan on using these to work out in? If so, again go with the X4s. They have a more secure fit, better sound isolation and are IPX7 rated.
Really, we’d only recommend the AirPods if you’re a big iOS user or you’re just intrigued by going completely wireless.
