In this post, we’ll be focusing on the major advantages/differences between Purple and Nectar and why you would buy one over the other. If you want more information about either mattress, make sure to check out our full reviews:
If you like the feel of memory foam, you’ll most likely prefer Nectar over Purple. The top layer of the Purple mattress is comprised of a hyper-elastic polymer material, which has a feel that’s quite different than what you’re probably used to (we’ll address that more below). The Nectar mattress on the other hand includes a layer of adaptive memory foam, a 3″ layer of gel-memory foam and another layer of gel memory foam within the quilted cover. As such, the Nectar bed has a traditional memory foam feel – it’s very soft, very accommodating and extremely comfortable. But what’s nice about the Nectar mattress is that it also provides a surprising amount of support with barely any sinkage. A lot of times with beds that contain multiple layers of memory foam, there will be quite a bit of sinkage and the support for back and stomach sleepers simply isn’t there – that’s not the case with Nectar.

Longer Trial Period & Warranty
Pretty much all bed in a box companies (including Purple and Nectar) offer free shipping and returns. The mattresses will arrive at your doorstep compressed in a medium size box or some sort of thick plastic cover. Once the mattress arrives, most companies give you a 100 night risk-free trial to test out the mattress – that’s what Purple offers. However, Nectar goes above and beyond by offering a 365 night risk free trial. That’s right – you can test out this mattress for an entire year. If you decide you don’t like it after night 364, just give the company a call, they’ll send someone to come pick it up and issue you a full refund. Next, most companies (including Purple) in the industry back their mattress with a 10 year warranty, which is pretty good – most people usually don’t keep a mattress more than 10 years anyways. Again though, Nectar takes it a step further by offering what they call a ‘Forever Warranty’. Basically, the company will completely repair, re-cover or replace the mattress if any manufacturing defects or material failures are ever found.
After testing both mattresses, we think Nectar is a little firmer and offers more support than Purple. We give Nectar a 5.25 out of 10 on our soft-to-firm scale, whereas Purple gets a 4.5 out of 10. As such, if you’re a strict back or stomach sleeper or you’re a heavier individual (250lb+) you may prefer the support level of the Nectar mattress. Don’t get wrong, the Purple mattress also provides quite a bit of support, but like I mentioned earlier, it’s just a little different – the top layer of the mattress is super soft and flexible yet also very responsive.
Nectar beats Purple on price by a mile. In fact, we think Nectar is one of the best values out there – it took the number one spot on our Top 5 Best Budget Bed In A Box list. Here’s what the different sizes cost:
– Twin: $500
– Twin XL: $550
– Full: $700
– Queen: $795
– King/Cal King: $900
But those are just the MSRP prices. Nectar almost always has some sort of discount code or promo code available. Right now, you can CLICK HERE For $100 off + 2 free pillows. That would make the queen fall below the $700 mark.
Here’s what Purple goes for:
– Twin XL: $699
– Queen: $999
– King/Cal King: $1,299
And unfortunately, Purple almost never offers a straight discount code or promo code to make the mattress cheaper. However, they do often offer bundles (i.e. mattress + platform base, mattress + seat cushion, etc.) where you can save $50-$100 [check current Purple bundles].
The Purple mattress is one of our favorite beds, hands down. In fact, it took the number one spot on our Top 5 Best Bed In A Box list – and one of the main reasons why we have it rated that high is because of its unique construction and feel.
As I mentioned above, Purple’s 2″ top layer is made out of hyper-elastic polymer, which is a material that’s actually patented by the founders of the company. This polymer material kind of has a gel-like feel but it’s not actually gel. The material is very soft, very flexible and it’s also very responsive. It’s constructed using a grid formation (see below) so when you lay down on the bed, you can actually feel yourself displacing, moving and compressing those tiny little squares.
Purple’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Construction
Not going to lie – it’s kind of an odd feeling at first. But don’t let that scare you off – once you sleep on the mattress for a couple nights you really start to like the feeling. The mattress is very comfortable and those little gel squares mold to your body’s shape very nicely. If you’re sick of the feel of traditional innerspring mattresses or memory foam, give Purple a whirl – we think you’ll like it. Here’s an interesting ad by Purple that explains about the mattress a little more.
Besides offering a unique feel, hyper-elastic polymer provides other benefits as well. First, it’s just a naturally cooler material than memory foam or latex foam. Also, since the top layer is constructed in a grid formation, air is able to flow more freely compared to an all foam bed. The net result is a very cool sleeping bed – we think Purple has the edge over Nectar when it comes to temperature regulation. If you’re a hot sleeper, go Purple.
Hyper-elastic polymer is a much more responsive material than memory foam. The Purple mattress pops back to its original form almost immediately after releasing pressure whereas the Nectar mattress takes an extra second. All this means is that you’ll find it slightly easier to switch between sleeping positions on the Purple mattress. This might be an important factor for active combo sleepers.
Slightly Softer – Better For Side Sleepers
I mentioned above that we think Nectar is slightly firmer than Purple so obviously on the flip side of that, we think Purple is softer. When you lay on your side on the Purple mattress, the little polymer squares do a good job of providing pressure relief and conforming to the heavier parts of your body (i.e. trunks, hips, shoulders) – it’s really nice. So if you’re a strict side sleeper, we think you’d appreciate the more accommodating feel of Purple over Nectar.
