Purple and Nectar are two of the most popular bed in a box mattress brands out there. Purple is known more for their innovative mattress construction, while Nectar is known more as one of the budget mattress options. Today, we’ll take a deep dive comparing both to make your purchase decision a little easier. If you want the full details about each of these mattresses, make sure to check out our full reviews.
Nectar vs New Purple Mattress: Construction and Layers
When it comes to how these mattresses are constructed, there’s two primary differences. First, Nectar is all-foam bed while the Purple 2 is considered a hybrid mattress, meaning it incorporates coils. Second, instead of using some sort of foam for its top layer, Purple uses a patented material called hyper-elastic polymer, which is pretty unique.
The Purple Mattress 2 starts with a thin layer of durable polyurethane foam, which acts as the foundation of the mattress. On top of that is a layer of 7.5″ individually wrapped support coils. These coils add some responsiveness and work in conjunction with the hyper-elastic polymer top layer. On top of the coils is another thin layer of polyurethane foam. Finally, on top is the layer of hyper-elastic polymer. This material is flexible, stretchy, soft and responsive. It truly is a special material. The founders of Purple actually created this material and hold a patent on it. Wrapping all these layers is a soft and stretchy cover that’s also decently thin. Lastly, the mattress contains a foam border to help with edge support.
Construction (Purple 4 shown)
The Nectar mattress starts with a thick layer of support foam on the bottom. That’s followed by a layer of adaptive hi-core memory foam. This provides a little more support than the layer of gel memory foam that sits on top. Bringing these layers together is a tencel cooling cover that looks nice and is also soft. And if two layers of memory wasn’t enough, Nectar also added another layer of gel-memory foam that’s quilted within the cover. So in total, you have three layers of memory foam sandwiched in between the base support foam and the tencel cover.

It’s also worth noting that while the covers for both mattresses are removable, both companies recommend you do not machine wash them. Instead, if they get dirty somehow, just spot clean them with a mild detergent.
New Purple Mattress vs Nectar Bed In A Box: Motion Transfer
It was hard to pick a winner in this category. Nectar might get the slight edge but both beds do a pretty good job of limiting motion transfer. We placed a half-full glass at one end of the bed and then started walking/rolling around near the glass and the water barely moved. Overall, if you’re one of those people who toss and turn or get up a lot during the middle of the night, it shouldn’t affect your partner all that much.
Both Mattresses Limit Motion Transfer Well
Ok, now let’s get into what advantages the new Purple 2 mattress has over Nectar.
The New Purple Mattress Has A Very Unique Feel
As I’ve already eluded to, the Purple 2 mattress has a very unique feel thanks to the top layer of hyper-elastic polymer. It doesn’t feel like a foam mattress or a typical innerspring mattress. There’s really nothing like it. It sort of feels like a gel substance but it’s not actually gel. It’s super flexible and soft but it also provides a good amount of support. Since the material is organized in a grid formation, you can actually feel yourself moving and displacing the little polymer squares. At first, it feels a little weird but after spending a couple nights on it, you really start to like the feeling. So if you’re sick of the typical soft foam feel or hard innerspring feel, I’d say give Purple a chance. I’m pretty confident you’ll like the feel of it.

The New Purple 2 Mattress Sleeps Cooler
Another advantage the new Purple 2 mattress has over Nectar is that it does a great job with temperature regulation and airflow. The Nectar mattress just can’t really compete on this front. It contains so many layers of memory foam, airflow just isn’t that great. Although, we didn’t sleep hot while testing the Nectar mattress, we also felt it just didn’t do anything special either. We’d put in the same category as most other bed in a box mattresses in this regard. Purple, on the other hand, has a few construction advantages. First, hyper-elastic polymer is naturally cooler material than memory foam. Memory foam tends to trap and retain heat while hyper-elastic polymer does not. Second, since the polymer is arranged in a grid formation, air can flow more freely throughout the columns. Lastly, the cover on the Purple mattress is thinner than Nectar’s, which allows the hyper-elastic polymer to go to work. The result – the Purple 2 mattress is always the right temperature. It’s never too hot or too cold.
As I’ve already stated, the hyper-elastic polymer top layer is very responsive. It pops back to it’s original form/shape immediately after releasing pressure. Adding to that is the layer of individually wrapped coils, which adds some bi-directional support (i.e. it conforms to your body but also pushes back a little). The Nectar mattress actually performs decently well considering its construction, it just doesn’t pop back immediately. After all, it is memory foam so can’t say I’m shocked. All this means is that you’ll find it slightly easier to switch sleeping positions throughout the night on the Purple 2 mattress.
Better Edge Support With The Purple 2 Mattress
Edge support is important, especially for couples who share a smaller size bed (i.e. full or queen size). A lot of times throughout the night, you’ll find yourself curled up or sprawled out near the edges so it’s imperative you still receive the necessary support and don’t get that roll-off sensation. The Purple mattress performs quite well here for two reasons. One – the Purple 2 mattress has a durable foam border that adds structural support. Two – the coils sitting beneath the hyper-elastic polymer provide quite a bit of bounce and support. The Nectar mattress isn’t bad either, it just doesn’t provide quite as much support right around the edges. If you sit or lay down near the egde, you will sink down a little, however, it’s still not nearly as bad a lot of other bed in a box mattresses we’ve tested.
The hyper-elastic polymer material is perfect for side sleepers. It conforms to your body and provides a ton of pressure relief for your hips, trunk and shoulders. Purple likes to say the mattress is ‘soft where you want it and firm where you need it’.
Lots of pressure relief with the new Purple mattress
As you can see above, the Purple 2 mattress does a great job of keeping your spinal curves in their natural shape. The Nectar mattress is also a good option for side sleepers. It too provides a good amount of relief for your pressure points when you’re on your side. However, if you twisted my arm, I’d still say go with the Purple 2 mattress if you’re a strict side sleeper.
As you read above, the Purple 2.0 mattress has several advantages over Nectar. But it’s not quite over yet. Yes, the Purple 2 mattress is great but Nectar does win on a few fronts.
Nectar Has A Better Trial Period and Warranty
Like most bed in a box mattress companies, Nectar offers free shipping and free returns. It’s important to note that we’ve received several complaints about how slow the Nectar mattress ships. We didn’t have this issue but apparently for some people it’s taken a few extra weeks for the mattress to arrive. The Nectar mattress will arrive rolled-up and compressed in a protective covering. Once you un-roll it and let it inflate, Nectar gives you 365 nights to test out the mattress. Yes, that’s right – you can test out this mattress for a full year. That means if you decide you don’t like it at any point during the trial period, just give the company a call and they will send someone to your house or apartment to pick up the mattress and issue you a full refund. Nectar also backs their mattress with what they call a ‘Forever Warranty’. Basically, if manufacturing defects are found within years 1-10, Nectar will replace your mattress no questions asked. In years 10+, Nectar will repair or re-cover your mattress if issues are discovered.
Purple offers free shipping and free returns as well. However, instead of the Purple 2 mattress arriving compressed in a box or protective covering, the company actually offers free white glove delivery. That means an actual human will show up at your house and help you move the mattress and get it all setup. From there, Purple offers a more traditional 100 night risk free trial. Same principle as above – if you don’t like, just give the company a call to come pick it up. Purple backs their mattress with a 10 year limited warranty.
Nectar is Much Cheaper Than The New Purple Mattress
Not even close here – if you’re on a strict budget, Nectar wins by a mile. Here’s how they compare:
Plus, those are just the MSRPs for Nectar. They almost always run some sort of coupon code or sale to make their mattresses even cheaper. You can CLICK HERE for $100 Off + 2 free pillows. That would take their queen under $700!
Purple doesn’t really offer coupon codes but they do usually have some sort of bundle deal. For example, in the past they’ve offered a free seat cushion or set of sheets with each mattress purchase [check current Purple bundles].
If You Like The Feel Of Memory Foam, Go Nectar
You probably get it by now – the Nectar mattress utilizes a ton of memory foam and as such, it has that prototypical memory foam feel, which a lot of people really like. So if you’re one of those people, Nectar is a great option. It’s super soft and comfortable yet it’s also oddly supportive. With a lot of memory foam mattresses, support is lacking and you’ll sink down quite a bit. That’s not the case with Nectar – you always feel as if you’re still on top of the mattress rather than it. In fact, we gave it around a 5.25 on the firmness scale.
We think the Nectar mattress is great for all kinds of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a back, stomach or side sleeper – the Nectar mattress will accommodate almost everyone.
