The ASICS Gel-Kayano 24s are awesome running shoes. Some of the best road running shoes you can buy.
Historically, the Gel-Kayano series from ASICS have been some of our favorite running shoes and the 24s are no exception. It seems like year after year, we continue to say the same thing – the Kayanos are awesome! BUT with that said, I’m not so sure the 24s are drastically better than the 23s or even the 22s for that matter. Let me explain further.
First, before we get into what’s changed year-over-year, let me just say one thing. Most of you probably already know but for those who don’t – the Kayanos are stability running shoes. Meaning they are made for people that slightly over-pronate (roll inwards) but the correction is not so drastic that neutral runners can’t use them. Also, just to get it out of the way the price point on the Kayanos is high – $160 high (as of the date of this post). I’ll talk about that more in a little bit but we do expect to see discounts on the 24s a few months down the road so you can check current pricing here on Amazon.
As far as major changes to the 24s, there’s not that many but the ones ASICS did make are actually pretty nice. First, the 24s are slightly lighter than prior models and when you wear them they actually feel quite a bit lighter. And that’s primarily thanks to the new upper, which is supper lightweight, flexible and breathable. I know we said similar things about the upper on the 23s and 22s but it actually is a little bit better on the 24s. Next, the heel cup is more low profile now so it doesn’t travel as high up on your achilles. This gives then entire shoe a more tapered, silhouette look. Last up, the forefoot feels as if it has a little more spring and cushion to it. I could be splitting hairs but compared to prior models I think you’ll get more bounce back in the forefoot.
Beyond the adjustments mentioned above and a few cosmetic changes, you’re looking at the same Kayanos. The cushioning system is awesome – it’s still the same ASICS FlyteFoam and gel cushioning, which make the shoes great for short, medium and long distance running. They fit true to size and have a 10mm drop, which seems to be about standard for high-end running shoes. They’re super comfortable – really soft sockliner with just the right amount of padding throughout. The one caveat here though is that there is a break-in period. The heel takes a little time to lock to prevent slipping so you will have to run with them a few times before they truly mold to your foot. Lockdown is solid – like with most running shoes and athletic shoes you’ll have to fiddle with the laces and tongue a little to avoid pressure points and cramping but it’s not a big deal overall. Lastly, in regards to tread, it’s the same as past years – good for road running and pretty thick to where it’s not going to wear down easily. Expect to get hundreds of miles on these shoes.
Overall, the Gel-Kayano 24s are awesome – I don’t like the price point but I really like the shoes. They aren’t a huge leap forward though – I’d say the 23s (see on Amazon) and the 22s (see on Amazon) are just as good so there’s a chance you can save some money with the older models.
