- Bear Hybrid is a very comfortable mattress that will accomodate all types of sleepers
- Stays cool throughout the night + no ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling
- Thick mattress that will work even heavier individuals
- Quilted cover uses Celliant, an FDA recognized medical device
- Free shipping, free returns, 100-night trial period, 20-year warranty, made in the USA
- Cover is not machine washable
- Poor edge support (i.e. you will get that ‘roll off’ sensation near the edges)
- More motion transfer than with an all-foam bed
- Somewhat expensive for a bed in a box
- Will heat up throughout the night
Bear Hybrid is a quality mattress, all things considered. It’s softer than the classic Bear Mattress, but still very comfortable and will work for all types of sleepers.

We reviewed the original Bear Mattress back in 2017. It was one of our favorite beds for hot sleepers and in our opinion one of the best beds for back and stomach sleepers. Fast forward to 2018 and Bear is out with a brand new, luxury mattress that’s looking to compete in the premium bed in a box space, alongside Leesa Sapira, Casper Wave, Nest Alexander, and others. In this post we will cover everything from shipping and returns to comfort, fit, coolness, and edge support.
Bear Hybrid Review – Shipping, Warranty, etc.
Like most of the brands in the bed in a box industry, Bear offers free shipping on both the classic Bear Mattress and the Bear Hybrid Mattress. Your bed will arrive in a box at your doorstep, typically between 7 and 10 business days from when you place your order. I’ve mentioned this several times throughout our various mattress reviews and comparisons, but I do find it pretty amazing how they can fit an entire bed into a box and get that shipped directly to your house.
The box for the Bear Hybrid is about 4′ x 2′ and inside is a vacuum-sealed, rolled up mattress. Bear Hybrid is quite a bit heavier than the original Bear Mattress, so you may need to have a friend help you remove it from the box and take off all of the packaging. Once you’ve done that, however, the bed springs to shape almost immediately, though you should probably let it sit for 12 to 24 hours to fully inflate.
Similar to Purple Mattress, Helix Sleep, and most other direct to consumer (DTC) mattress brands out there, Bear has a 100-night risk-free trial where you can essentially test the bed to see if it’s the one for you. If you like it, keep it. If you don’t think it’s the right bed for you, for any reason, you can return it for a full refund (as long as you’re still within the trial period). There are some brands that offer longer trial periods, however, 3+ months should be more than enough time to evaluate the bed to see if it’s the one for you. If you do end up keeping Bear Hybrid, it comes with a 20-year warranty, which is double what most brands offer. It’s actually twice as long as the warranty for the classic Bear Mattress.
Bear Hybrid Mattress Review – Construction
At 14.5″ thick, the Bear Hybrid is about 4.5″ thicker than the average bed that comes in a box. That means even heavier individuals will be fine with the mattress, as they won’t have the issue of bottoming out the bed. In fact, 14.5″ means it’s one of the thickest beds out there, so if you’re concerned with finding a bed to accommodate a larger person, Bear Hybrid is definitely a viable option (as is Brentwood Oceano, Avocado Mattress, and GhostBed Luxe.
The only issue that I have with the thickness of the bed is that it made making the bed more difficult. I say this for two reasons. Firstly, the bed is very heavy, so picking up the corners is a chore. Secondly, I had a tough time getting my bottom fitted sheet to fit properly—it was barely large enough to entirely wrap around the corners of the bed since the bed is so tall.
In terms of the construction of the bed, it starts with 5″ of high-density support foam to provide the structure for the bed. Next is a layer of 2.4″ individually-wrapped coils, which give the bed a little bounce, but will still offer plenty of pressure relief and increase airflow throughout the bed.
As an FYI, a queen size bed will have 1,300+ of those 2.4″ coils. Next is a 2″ thick layer of gel memory foam, which really helps to cradle your body and relieve pressure points. And then 3″ of their proprietary Bear Performance Foam, which tends to respond a little faster so that you don’t ever get that ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling that you’re probably used to with some older memory foam beds.
On top is a 2″ soft-foam quilted cover that has Celliant woven in. The cover is extremely soft and comfortable to lie on. And it has the added benefit of the Celliant technology, which apparently was recognized by the FDA as a wellness device that promotes restful sleep, increases circulation, and helps with recovering faster. You can learn more about Celliant on Bear’s website.
The only thing that I don’t like about the cover is that it’s not machine washable, though it is technically removable. This is the case with most bed in a box brands, but Bear recommends that you just spot clean the bed with warm water and mild detergent. If you’re worried about keeping the mattress clean, you may look into a mattress protector on Amazon or you can get the Bear Protector, which is the one that—for obvious reasons—Bear recommends.
Bear Hybrid Review – Firmness, Coolness & Responsiveness
Overall, Bear Hybrid is a wonderfully comfortable bed that will have you saying “ahhhh” the moment you lay on it. It’s soft, but not too soft. And it supports you, yet has plenty of give and pressure relief. You even get a little ‘bounce’ from the coils, though not so much that your kids (or in my case, nieces and nephews) will want to jump on it all of the time. It really has a nice balance between a number of factors.
Bear Hybrid Coupon: $225 Off with Code: SY225
As for its firmness level, from o to 10—with 0 being silky soft like “I can’t believe it’s not butter” and 10 being “chipped my tooth on that darn piece of rock candy” hard—Bear Hybrid is between a 4.75 and 5.75, depending on your weight. Someone that’s lighter, say around 100LB will experience a firmer bed, whereas larger individuals (250LB+) will experience a much softer bed.
As such, the Bear Hybrid will be able to accommodate back, stomach, side, and even combo sleepers (people that rotate between positions at night). It’s definitely soft enough to cradle your body when you lay on your side, but it offers enough support that if you chiefly sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll be fine as well.
Bear Hybrid is not the coolest bed on the market. In fact, it will heat up a bit throughout the night. It’s not as cool as the original Bear or Cocoon Chill, so if you sleep especially warm, you may look into another mattress. We don’t have any scientific data to back this up, but I can tell you for certain that Bear Hybrid is not the coolest bed that you can buy. I just don’t think the cover is as breathable as other covers out there.
The bed also happens to be fairly responsive, making it easy to switch positions throughout the night. In fact, while it has memory foam, it doesn’t really feel like your prototypical memory foam mattresses. It’s soft, yet responsive and never sucks you in to where you feel stuck in the mattress. So, if you want a true memory foam feel, you may consider another bed such as Nectar or Eve Mattress. Otherwise, if you’re open to a hybrid feel, well then, Bear Hybrid is a great option.
Bear Hybrid Mattress Review – Motion Transfer, Edge Support & Frames
With regard to motion transfer, Bear Hybrid is ok, but it’s not as efficient as an all-foam bed. It is still much better than your traditional innerspring bed, but if you’re really concerned with motion transfer Bear Hybrid is not your best bet.
As for edge support, this is the single worst part of the bed. If you lay on the edges of the bed, you will definitely feel as if you’re going to roll off. Good edge support is particularly important for couples sleeping on a smaller size bed such as a queen or full where space is limited. If you’re dead set on this mattress, you may want to consider getting a larger size so you can stretch out without getting a ‘roll off’ sensation.
Having said all of that, one thing that is nice with Bear Hybrid is that you put it on plenty of surfaces, including the floor, box springs, adjustable bases, slatted bed frames, and more. They also sell their own bed frame, which will of course work with Bear Mattress and Bear Hybrid. You can see the Bear Frame on BearMattress.com.
Bear Hybrid Coupon Code & Pricing

You can get $225 off Bear Hybrid with code SY225 at checkout. It is still a relatively expensive bed even with the discount, but at least you can save a little money. Also, keep in mind that Bear—like most online mattress companies—changes their discounts throughout the year with the best offers usually taking place near major holidays. While the coupon above will work year-round, there could be a better deal that Bear is running right now. You can check Bear’s website for current promotions and specials.
Bear Hybrid Mattress – Conclusion
Overall, we really like this bed. It’s wildly comfortable with a thick construction that will accommodate all types of sleepers. It’s plush, but not too plush. Firm, but not too firm. It’s relatively pricey, but not egregious. And it has a lot to offer, even when you ignore the 20-year warranty and Celliant cover.
Frequently Asked Questions – Bear Hybrid Mattress
We’ve done our best to detail everything about Bear Hybrid in the post above. However, we know you probably still have questions about the bed. Here are a few preemptive answers that may help you out.
Where is Bear Hybrid made?
Bear mattresses are made in the USA, with USA-sourced materials. Specifically, the Hybrid mattresses are manufactured in Bear’s Wisconsin factory.
How do I care for my Bear Hybrid Mattress?
For cleaning, go the spot-clean route and use warm water with a mild detergent, but be careful not to get the mattress too wet.
Should I remove the cover of the Bear Hybrid bed?
Technically, you could. But it isn’t machine washable and Bear didn’t really intend for you to take it off. So, no. Don’t do that.
What is Celliant technology and why is it in the Bear Hybrid Bed?
This is a direct quote from the Bear website: “The Bear Mattress is made with Celliant’s FDA Determined Infrared Yarn Technology which recycles the body’s natural energy back as infrared light, increasing blood flow and oxygen levels in the tissue. The Result: Faster Recovery, More Energy, Better Endurance and Increased Performance.”
Does Bear Hybrid smell at all?
The foam used is supposedly “no smell.” When we unpacked it, there was a bit of off-gassing for the first day, but that was it.
Do I need to flip the Bear Mattress ever?
Nope. Not necessary.
What should I put the Bear Hybrid on?
Ooh! If you have one of those airline credit cards that gets you miles, I’d put it on that.
But seriously, Bear’s original mattress is designed to go on any flat surface. That includes slats, a platform, an adjustable bed, bunkie board, or the floor. They also note that a traditional box spring isn’t good for a foam mattress, and while that’s not specific to the Hybrid, we’d still suggest going for the flat surface.
What does CertiPUR-US certified even mean?
CertiPUR-US is a certification program administered by a not-for-profit organization. For a foam to receive its certification, it has to meet the following requirements (which I took right from the CertiPUR-US website):
– Made without ozone depleters
– Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants
– Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
– Made without formaldehyde
– Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
– Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
Where does Bear ship to?
All over the US and Canada.
How long does it take to ship the Bear Hybrid bed?
Generally, your bed leaves the warehouse within 2-4 business days after your order is completed. Then it’s another 4-7 business days until it lands on your doorstep, depending on where you are.
Does Bear have financing options available?
Yes, they do. They partner with Affirm, who provides qualified customers monthly financing options. You can choose the “Financing with Affirm” option when you checkout and that will take you to the Affirm website to work things out over there.
How do returns work?
If you’ve had the mattress between 30-100 days, you can return it. Bear only allows one mattress return per customer, household, and/or delivery address. If you make a return, Bear will send a charity to come pick up the rejected (but gently used) mattress and you’ll be refunded the cost.
