This speaker has a really cool, unique design, and offers a whole new way to listen to music.
When you get the BenQ treVolo S speaker, you can expect a full package complete with a power adapter, quick start guide, warranty card, and a carrying bag. It comes in both black and white coloring.
The treVolo S speakers are sort of like wings, so they can be folded close to the body of the speaker or spread out wide, which we thought was really cool.
The big boss, Jeff Rizzo, said that the speaker reminded him of the Dilophosaurus dinosaur in Jurassic Park.
The top of the speaker has six buttons which you can use to control playback, , volume, bluetooth, power, and mode. This makes using the speaker super simple and straightforward. The mode button is used to pair two trevolo S speakers together, so you can then use your speakers in duo mode, stereo mode, or party mode. Each mode has a different sound configuration based on what kind of sound you’re looking for.
These speaks are powered by dual 12W woofers, dual amplifiers, and dual vibrating diaphragms.
We thought the overall sound quality of the BenQ treVolo speaker was very good, but due to the nature of this type of speaker, the audio quality varied based on what audio file format we used. If you want the best possible sound quality, go with a lossless format such as .WAV or .FLAC. MP3 sound file.
The one thing is that this type of speaker will have subdued levels of bass. In other words, if you want a speaker with punchy, deep bass, the treVolo S is not for you.
Also, the sound will mostly emit out of the front of the speaker, so for the best audio quality you should be right in front of the speaker. It will be considerably louder this way and sound better.
The speaker is best suited for classical music, country, instruments, classic rock, and other genres of music that do not have a heavy emphasis on the lows. The treVolo S is really designed to deliver crisp, clear vocals and accurate highs, which is does if you’re listening to a lossless file.
The song With Or Without You by U2 sounds great on the treVolo S. The vocals are extra clear and distinct.
The speaker also has a companion mobile app that allows you to do three things:
- Check up on battery life
- Enable 3D sound
- Pair two treVolo S speakers together
What is 3D? In layman’s terms, 3D sound is deeper, richer sound. It will basically take the original sound and enhance it—and it really works. Here’s a chart from BenQ’s website that visually depicts 3D sound. Also, just to be clear, you can jump into the 3D sound mode by selecting the mode button the speaker or by using the mobile app.
The speaker gets decently loud, but not as loud as, say, the JBL Pulse 3. This is because it uses an electrostatic method of playing sound. The treVolo speaker can still easily fill a small to average sized room with sound, though. Perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and so on, but not a great option for pool parties, as an example.
One note that we want to mention is that while this speaker is great for traveling with because it can fold up to be compact and it also comes with a carrying pouch, we don’t recommend it for outdoor use. We say this mostly due to the wings and hinges that are made of plastic. The metal materials feel premium, but it still feels like one drop and this speaker is done for.
Also, there are a lot of holes in the speakers that stuff can fall into, so we wouldn’t say that this is an ideal speaker to take to the beach or camping, since you run the risk of getting dust, dirt, or sand inside of it. Again, it will make for a really nice speaker for a bedroom or living room.
Charging and Battery Life
This speaker uses a big lithium-ion battery, which can easily last a day on a full charge. Just take a look at the size of the back unit. This thing has a hefty battery, and the speaker weighs about 2.2lb overall.
The treVolo S charges via a micro USB (not USB Type-C), and takes around 2.5-3 hours to fully charge. We really envision this thing sitting on your living room end table or on a night stand. It can also be plugged into your PC or notebook to play audio via USB DAC.
This speaker retails for $199 MSRP. It’s available through the BenQ website and through Amazon. And we think it’s worth the price for the right person. It’s not for someone that needs a willy nilly, cheaper Bluetooth speaker. It’s designed for individuals that truly care about audio quality and want to explore a new type of speaker.
Closing Thoughts on the BenQ trevolo S
Overall, we think this is an awesome speaker. The design is really cool looking and unique, and it makes it great for throwing in your bag or your suitcase to travel around with.
While we aren’t convinced that the treVolo S is a must-have speaker, we do have plenty of positive things to say about it.
