The Brooklyn Bowery might be the best budget bed in a box out there. We are big fans.

Brooklyn Bedding is one of the more well-known bed in a box brands. They’ve been shipping mattresses in a box since way back in 2008 when they first started selling beds on Amazon. Fast forward to today and Brooklyn now offers a multitude of different bedding products and operates out of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Arizona. Recently, as are a lot of bed in a box companies, Brooklyn introduced an entry-level mattress, which they’re calling the Bowery model. They also offer their flagship mattress, the Signature model, as well as a luxury, hybrid mattress called the Aurora.
Brooklyn Bowery Review: Shipping, Trial Period and Warranty
As with their other mattress models, Brooklyn Bedding offers free shipping and free returns with the Bowery. The mattress will arrive at your door compressed in a surprisingly small box. From there, Brooklyn gives you 120 nights to test out the mattress. If you decide you like it, awesome – keep it and get some good sleep. If you don’t, just give Brooklyn a call and they will send someone to your house or apartment to pick up the bed free of charge and give you a full refund – no harm, no foul. Just FYI – that trial period is slightly longer than the industry average. Most other mattress in a box companies offer a 100 night trial period. Also, Brooklyn Bedding backs their mattresses with a 10-year hassle free warranty.
Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Bed Review: Mattress Construction
Unlike the other mattress models Brooklyn offers, the Bowery is only available in one firmness level. With the other Brooklyn models, you can choose between a soft, medium and firm version. I’m not really all that surprised though considering this is Brooklyn’s entry-level, budget option and the construction of the Bowery is quite different than the other Brooklyn models. The Bowery starts with a 5″ layer of high density support foam, which acts as the foundation of the mattress. Next is a 2″ layer of transitional comfort foam. As the name implies, this layer simply acts as a transition from the dense foam below. On top is a 3″ layer of Energex foam. This is a patented foam that is supposed to contour to your body and provide comfort for the sleeper. It’s also infused with cooling gel that’s supposed to help with airflow and temperature regulation.
Bringing all these layers together is Brooklyn’s signature stretch knit cotton fabric cover. It’s fairly soft and thin. It is non-removable so if you spill something on it or have a little accident, you’ll just have to spot clean it with some water and a mild detergent. That’s how you clean most bed in a box mattress covers even if they’re removable so no big deal there.
Also, just FYI, the Bowery will work with most platform, slat or box spring foundations. You most likely won’t need to run out and purchase a new bed frame or anything like that.

Bowery Bed In A Box Review: Firmness and Overall Feel
We weren’t sure what to expect with the Bowery mattress. Brooklyn Bedding is known for making super high-quality beds but this is their budget-level mattress so we thought they might have to cut some corners with the Bowery to keep the costs down. As it turns out, that’s not case – Brooklyn Bedding did a tremendous job with this mattress. The Bowery is extremely comfortable and sure doesn’t feel like a budget-level bed at all. In fact, it reminds us a lot of the original Casper mattress even though they have different constructions. The top layer of Energex foam has a very slight hint of that traditional memory foam feel but it’s not overwhelming, which is nice. Overall, it’s very soft but it does provide a good amount of support as well. We give the Bowery a 4.5-5.5 on the firmness scale. Jeff and Matt thought it was around a 5 but someone that’s heavier might think its more around a 4.5 while a more petite individual might think it’s a little firmer at around a 5.25-5.5.
Given that range, we think the Bowery is ideal for all kinds of sleepers. It provides enough support for back and stomach sleepers to where you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in the bed – you always feel as if you’re still on top of it. It doesn’t provide quite as much support as some of the major hybrid mattresses out there (Brooklyn Signature Hybrid, Bear Hybrid and Leesa Sapira to name a few) but compared to some of the more traditional bed in a box mattresses, the Bowery stacks up very well. Even when you sit in one place on the mattress, you don’t bottom it out. As such, we think the Bowery is a viable option even for heavier individuals (225+ lbs). When sleeping on your side, the bed is very soft and provides plenty of pressure relief for your hips and shoulders – no issues there whatsoever.
Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Review: Temperature Regulation
Even though Brooklyn infuses cooling gel into the top Energex foam layer, we didn’t notice anything special in this department. Like most bed in a box mattresses, we’d say the Brooklyn Bowery is temperature neutral. This just means that you won’t sleep hot but you won’t sleep particular cool either.
Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Review: Motion Transfer
In terms of motion transfer, the Bowery performs well. It does a good job of limiting cross mattress motion. In our test, we placed half-full glass of water on one end of the bed and started rolling/walking around near the glass and we noticed just a little bit movement. I think it’s safe to say you won’t wake up your partner if you happen to toss and turn or get up a lot during the middle of the night.

Brooklyn Bowery Mattress In A Box Review: Responsiveness and Edge Support
The Bowery mattress is surprisingly responsive. The top layer responds or pops back almost immediately after releasing pressure. You never get that stuck-in-the-mud feeling and switching positions is not an issue, which is great for combo sleepers. A lot of times with all-foam beds, the responsiveness is lacking and you kind of sink into the bed so it requires a little extra effort to switch sleeping positions – that’s not the case with the Bowery.
As we suspected, the Bowery is lacking a little when it comes to edge support. This is an important feature for couples who share a smaller size bed and often find themselves near the edges. When you sit or lay on the edge, you sink down quite a bit and get a little bit of that roll-off sensation. However, considering this is a budget all-foam bed, I can’t say I’m surprised. At the end of the day, It’s not any worse than other budget bed in a box.
Brooklyn Bowery Review: Pricing and Coupon Codes
Here’s the good news – the Brooklyn Bowery is priced very affordably. It’s one of the most affordable bed in a box mattresses out there. Just given what we know about Brooklyn’s high quality manufacturing processes, I’d say the Bowery is a steal. Here’s how pricing breaks down:
Plus, you can take advantage of Brooklyn Bedding coupon codes to make the mattress even cheaper. You can get $50 off with code BOWERY50 at checkout or use code RIZKNOWS10 to get 10% off your entire purchase, which includes pillows, sheets, and other Brooklyn Bedding products.
Brooklyn Bowery Mattress Verdict
Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the Brooklyn Bowery. Don’t let the price tag fool you – this is a great mattress. We’d put it toe-to-toe with any other most other non-premium bed in a box mattresses (that includes Casper, Leesa, etc.). The Bowery is a strong front runner to make our Best Budget Bed In A Box list this year.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Just in case we didn’t cover all the little details you were wondering about, here are some FAQs that will hopefully fill in the gaps.
Will the mattress get a body-shaped impression?
Well, yeah, eventually. But according to Brooklyn, that’s the case with all mattresses. However, it will be minimal and they’ve used the most durable foams in the industry to combat the eventuality of body impressions.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean with a mild detergent and be sure to dab, rather than rub. If you’re spill-prone, you should probably invest in a mattress cover so you can just throw it in the washing machine.
IS THE BROOKLYN Bowery MATTRESS FLIPPABLE?
No, don’t flip it. The layers are in a certain order to provide maximum comfort and support. However, you should rotate the mattress every 6 to 8 months.
What should I put the Bowery mattress on?
Brooklyn says any support system with little to no flex. So, think flat. Most platform, slat, and box spring foundations will work.
