If you like the traditional innerspring mattress feel and you’re a back/stomach sleeper, Brooklyn Bedding is solid choice.
Update: January 2018
Brooklyn, as with pretty much all bed in a box companies, offers free shipping. They’ll ship the mattress directly to your door for free in a medium size box. After you receive it, Brooklyn offers a 120 night risk free trial, which by the way beats the industry average by 20 days. That means if you decide you actually don’t wan’t the mattress at any point during those first four months, just give the company a call, they’ll refund your money and send someone to come pick it up from your house or apartment free of charge. The company also backs their mattress with a 10 year warranty, which is pretty standard for the industry.
Also, it’s worth noting that Brooklyn Bedding offers three different models to choose from. You can choose between a soft, medium or firm version. We tested the medium version (their best seller) so keep that in mind during this review.
Layers & Construction
The Brooklyn mattress is comprised of three different layers of foam. On the bottom, there’s a 6″ layer of high density polyurethane foam, which gives the bed its support and helps to prevent sagging. In the middle is a 2″ layer of what Brooklyn calls their TitanFlex support foam. This layer is supposed to contour to the shape of your body.
Lastly, on top is a 2″ layer of Brooklyn’s proprietary TitanFlex comfort foam. The TitanFlex concept is actually new to the Brooklyn mattress this year. Previously, the company had used latex foam for its top layer. The TitanFlex foam is made from hyper-elastic HD foam and also features TitaniumGel. The new foam is supposed to be more durable and sleep cooler than latex foam.
For the cover, Brooklyn went with a quilted pillow top design. It’s on the thicker side but it’s very comfortable and gives the mattress a premium look. It is not removable so that means you’ll have to spot clean it with a mild detergent if it gets dirty. Or you could always invest in a mattress protector [shop affordable mattress protectors on Amazon] but of course that might affect breathability.
Overall Feel, Firmness & Coolness
Even though the Brooklyn mattress is comprised of layers of foam, it has more of that traditional innerspring mattress feel to it. So if you like that traditional feel and don’t really enjoy memory foam, time to perk up because this bed might be for you. It’s still comfortable though, it just doesn’t have that really soft kind of sinking feeling you get with memory foam sometimes. The Brooklyn mattress has barely any sinkage and is definitely on the firmer side of the spectrum.
We give the medium firmness model a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale so it’s even firmer than the likes of Bear mattress. As such, we think the medium feel version is best for back and stomach sleepers – the bed provides plenty of support and you don’t get that stuck-in-the-mud feeling whatsoever.
In fact, Brooklyn cracked our Top 5 Best Beds for Back & Stomach Sleepers list. It’s probably not ideal for side sleepers though, it’s just a little too firm on your hips and shoulders. But we didn’t test the soft version, so if you’re a side sleeper, you may want to opt for that model instead.
In terms of keeping you cool, although the TitanFlex foam is supposed to be cooler than latex, we didn’t notice anything special. We’d put the mattress in the same category with most other bed in a box brands. It won’t sleep hot by any means, you don’t have to worry about that. We’d just say it’s more temperature neutral, which at at the end of the day is just fine.

Motion Transfer & Responsiveness
As far as responsiveness, the mattress acts more like a traditional innerspring mattress more so than memory foam. It reacts almost immediately once you take pressure off the bed. We have no concerns about this bed sagging over time – we think it will be very durable over the long haul.
Now as far as limiting motion transfer, Brooklyn is good but not great. We’ve tested other beds that perform better in this category but honestly Brooklyn will due just fine. It’s still pretty good – I don’t think you’ll have many issues waking up if your partner tends to toss and turn or get up a lot during the middle of the night.
