- Very comfortable with not too much of that memory foam feel
- Cocoon Chill sleeps very cool at night – one of the best beds for this
- Soft and firm options – both with limited motion transfer
- Free shipping, free returns, 100-night risk-free trial, 10-year warranty
- Not great responsiveness
- Relatively pricey
- Cover is not machine washable
Sealy did a great job with the Cocoon Chill. In our opinion, it is one of the best bed in a box options available, especially when you’re looking at all-foam beds.
UPDATE: We have launched a new mattress focused website. Please click here to see the updated version of this review on myslumberyard.com.
Sealy has two options of the Cocoon Mattress. In this review we’re talking specifically about the Chill model, however, there is also a Classic model that is one of the most affordable bed in a box mattresses out there. In any case, Sealy is matching industry standards with the Cocoon bed by offering free shipping. The bed will arrive at your doorstep in a box. You unwrap and unroll the bed. It will inflate and somehow you end up with a full size mattress. It’s pretty neat.
On top of that, you get a 100-night trial with Cocoon. You can sleep on the bed for over 3 months to see if it’s right for you. If you want to keep it, that’s great. It has a 10-year warranty. If you’d like to send it back, that’s fine too. As long as it’s within 100 nights, Sealy will issue you a full refund. You don’t even need to worry about shipping it back. Sealy covers all of that. This is all very standard for the industry. These brands want you to try out their respective beds.
Cocoon Mattress Construction & Layers
Cocoon Chill has comprised of three layers and a cover. On the bottom is a thick layer of support foam. In the middle is a layer of what Sealy calls ‘Comfort Foam’. This is the layer that they change based on if you’d like the soft or firm feel. In fact, having a soft and firm option is one of the key differentiators for Sealy with the Cocoon Mattress. Most of the bed in a box mattresses just come in one feel, which means they typically better serve side sleepers in particular or back/stomach sleepers in particular. Sealy is hoping to have an option for both.
The top layer with Coon is memory foam and, as such, you will get that prototypical memory foam feel. It will conform to your body and cradle you, however, you won’t get that ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling, which is great. The firm option feels like a softer version of Bear Mattress, in that it definitely feels like memory foam, but you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The softer model is more like Casper Mattress in that it’s fairly plush, but Cocoon does have a little more of that typical memory foam feel.
For the cover, Sealy uses a phase changing material, which helps keep the bed cool. Unfortunately, the cover is not machine washable so you’ll be spot cleaning the bed as necessary. Or you can get a mattress protector.
Cocoon Chill Review – Firmness & Temperature Regulation
In terms of softness/firmness, it depends on which feel you select. We found that the soft option is about a 5.5/10 on the soft to firm scale with 1 being crazy soft and 10 being diamond hard. We think the soft option is a great bed for back and stomach sleepers as well as combo sleepers that rotate between their back, stomach, and side throughout the night. For side sleepers in particular, the softer version is the way to go over the firm model. The soft version is shown in the chart below.
And bearing in mind that Cocoon will soften up over time, you may want to consider a slightly firmer bed from the get go. If you want a 5/10 on the soft/firm scale, perhaps start with a 5.5/10. If you’d like something ultra firm because you exclusively sleep on your stomach/back or you’re very overweight, you may actually look into the firm option or another bed like Layla Sleep or Brooklyn Bedding. Food for thought.
As for temperature regulation, this is the big sell with the Chill Mattress. As you can see in the video above, the phase changing material on Cocoon Chill is very efficient at keeping you cool. In fact, Cocoon Chill is so cool that it might even feel wet to you, even though it isn’t. We thought Cocoon Chill was a standout bed in terms of temperature regulation. So much so, as of this post, we actually think it’s the coolest bed in a box mattress out there.
Cocoon Mattress Review – Motion Transfer / Responsiveness
Given that this is a memory foam bed, motion transfer is completely muted. If you or your partner moves around a lot in your sleep, Cocoon is a good option for limiting the cross-mattress motion. To be fair, however, most all-foam beds are very efficient at limiting motion transfer so it’s not really a differentiating factor. We simply mention it so that you know Cocoon is a viable option if you’re concerned with motion transfer.
As for responsiveness, with most memory foam beds, we’ve seen that it’s not immediate since that’s the point with memory foam…it forms to your body. Same goes for Cocoon. It cradles your body and doesn’t immediately snap back into shape after you remove the pressure. Nothing really to be concerned about…just make sure to rotate the bed every six months or so. You will get a little of that ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling since Cocoon has a lot of memory foam. Additionally, that will making switching positions at night a little more difficult.
Cocoon Bed Pricing + Coupon Code
Just like the trial period and warranty, pricing with the Cocoon Chill bed is about standard for the industry. Below is a pricing breakdown before any discounts:
This is similar pricing to Casper, but is actually more expensive than Leesa, Eve, and others. That said, right now you can get $100 off any Cocoon mattress w/ code RIZKNOWS at checkout. That means after discount a King is just over $1,000 and a Twin is just under $500. Still not cheap, but definitely affordable for a brand new bed.
We really like this bed. We think Sealy was smart to offer a firm and soft option so that side sleepers and back/stomach sleepers will hopefully find what they’re looking for with Cocoon. We think it’s incredibly efficient at cooling sleepers down and supremely comfortable overall. Bottom line with Cocoon is that it’s a stellar mattress that we liked so much that we put in on our list of the Top 5 Best Bed in a Box Mattresses.
