Fantastic GoPro to start out with, especially for the price.
The GoPro HERO Session (basically the HERO4 Session) is the budget-level action camera from GoPro. It has a MSRP of $200 and is an awesome little camera for the price. It’s a 1” x 1” x 1” cube with a front facing lens, setting display at the top, MicroSD and charging port access on the side, and front/rear-facing microphones. That’s really it.
The HERO Session is water resistant down to 10 meters without an external housing unit, which is really neat, and it’s pretty durable since it’s mostly hard plastic and soft-touch silicone/rubber. It works with most GoPro accessories and mounts if you have the right harness for it. Beyond that, the Session records up to 1080p at 60 frames per second and uses 1-touch recording to save battery life. Essentially with one button you turn on the camera and start recording; press that button again and it stops recording, saves the clip, and turns off the camera. This massively saves battery life, but you should still expect about 90-120 minutes on a single charge.
Since the HERO Session only has a settings window on the top you cannot see your exact shot with just the camera. As such, GoPro has equipped it with Wi-Fi to connect to the GoPro mobile app. This process is simple and allows you to at least see what you’re recording. Works just fine.
Should you run out and buy the HERO Session: maybe. It’s a tiny camera that’s ultra-portable and super convenient to bring along with you anywhere. We love it for that fact. The battery life is great. The design is simple and it’s durable, but the fact of the matter is that other GoPro action cams exist and a few others do have the LCD display. If you want to see your shots you may opt for one of those, but if you just want a good action camera at an affordable price the HERO Session is just that. It’s not the best action camera on the market, nor is it the best GoPro you can buy, but it’s pretty darn good and that’s probably all you need. We actually use this camera quite regularly because of how convenient it is to bring with you everywhere.
