HERO 5 Session is the best action camera for the size. Very convenient form factor.
The GoPro HERO5 Session is odd. In fact, it looks boring. One lens, two buttons, and 1” cubical dimensions. It’s not exactly your textbook recipe for 4K video, but this little sucker is a hell of a camera. Yes, better action cams exist, but for the size, it’s a workhorse. Here’s what you can expect with the HERO 5 Session:
- 4K footage up to 30 frames per second (also, 1080p90)
- Slow motion video at 720p120
- Digital image stabilization
- Voice commands
- Water resistant down to 10 meters (w/o an external housing unit)
- Charges and transfer media via USB-C
- Wi-Fi for use with GoPro mobile app
Pretty crazy that you can get all of that in the HERO5 Session. Now, the one thing that you can’t really boil down to a single stat is battery life. Clearly it’s going to depend on usage, Wi-Fi, 4K, etc., but the average user should expect 1-2 hours of playback on a single charge.
In addition to that stuff, we also think the HERO5 Session is GoPro’s most durable action camera yet (alongside the original HERO Session). It’s tiny and wrapped mostly in a soft-touch silicone material. It can take a serious beating and if you do manage to scrape the lens, you can replace it, which is nice.
At $300, it’s not an impulse buy, but if you don’t mind the lack of an LCD screen and you do prefer a tiny camera, the HERO5 Session is crazy hard to beat. The software on it is super easy to use, pairing it with a mobile app is simple and the footage looks great. We use this mostly for tighter locations or as a secondary camera. Also, if we’re filming but want to be more discrete we opt for the HERO5 Session. The other thing that action sports enthusiasts may like is that it’s super lightweight and it won’t be a heavy camera sitting on top of your helmet.
We think it’s a winning combo. Sure, image stabilization is still 6/10 and we question just how much you’ll use voice commands, but there’s no doubt that it’s an elite action cam.
