Extra comfortable, as always with the Flyknit upper
Crazy breathable, almost to a fault
Reinforced heel cup so it doesn’t stretch out too much
- More cushioning than 2017 model
Pebbles and junk gets stuck in the grooves on the outsole
A little pricey for glorified walking shoes
Some people might find them too breathable
Ankle rolls will scrape the fabric
Not the best running shoes in the world, but they’re not designed to be. The Nike Free RN Flyknit 2018s are a hybrid running, walking, and casual shoe. We really like them!
Nike has been in the shoe game for a long, long time. They know what goes into a quality shoe and they have their hand in determining what’s on trend in terms of style. They’ve been making Nike Frees for a while now, and they come out with updated and revamped models on a fairly regular basis.
In this post, we’ll review the Nike Free RN Flyknits. We’ll break down the pros and cons, what we like and what we don’t. You know, the works.
Nike Free RN Flyknit Review – Design + Fit
The first thing to note is that these shoes run 1/2 a size small. So, size up when you order.
We like the design of these shoes. Like previous versions, the upper is really comfortable thanks to that Flyknit material. They also have a reinforced heel cup which keeps that part of the shoe from stretching out too much. And we count that as a pro because – hear me out – most people like it when a shoe fits the way it did when you first bought it and put it on.
The construction and materials of these Nikes make them incredibly breathable. If your feet tend to get really hot or sweaty, you’ll appreciate the airflow of these shoes.
And they look great, too! Even though we primarily buy athletic shoes for function, we still care about style, right? No one wants ugly shoes. Nike’s always been right on top of athletic shoe fashion, so there’s no surprise here.
We noticed that these 2018 Frees feel like they have some additional cushioning compared to last year’s model. If you like plusher feeling shoes, you may really appreciate the extra cushioning, but some people prefer a firmer feel, so keep that in mind.
The breathability of these shoes, while we mentioned it as a pro, can also be a con. Like we said, they’re incredibly breathable. Crazy breathable, even. But not everyone wants the air to go right through their shoes. If you’re one of those people, you’ll likely find these Nike Frees to be too breathable.
Another little annoyance – we found that pebbles and other bits of junk would get stuck in the grooves on the outsole of the shoe. And, you know, we’d rather not have our shoes collecting various bit of debris.
Free RN Flyknit Running Shoes – Function
Like we mentioned and as we all know, Nike is an old name in the shoe game. They make all sorts of shoes. You can get casual Nikes, running Nikes, walking Nikes, Nikes for soccer, Nikes for babies, Nikes for street cred. The list goes on and on. So, there are Nikes for everything, but what are these specific Nike Free RN Flyknit 2018s for?
These aren’t going to be your hardcore training shoes. We’d call these a neutral shoe, good for shorter runs and everyday use. They’re comfortable and made to give you enough support for being active, but if you’re looking for distance running shoes or you do a lot of cross training, that’s not what these are for.
Price + Other Notes
It’s expected that you’ll pay a bit for good shoes, especially from a brand like Nike. These Flyknits are priced at a softly whopping $120. Softly because that’s not unheard of for a pair of Nikes, but we do think that’s overpriced for what are basically glorified walking shoes. You can check current pricing for the Nike Free RN Flyknit on Amazon.
Another thing to consider – particularly if you’re a little clumsy – is that the Flyknit material can get scraped and snagged. If you roll your ankle and drag the side of shoe against something, you might run into that problem. Also, in the more likely event that you do ankle rolls to warm up, you’ll scrape the fabric quite a bit, so just be prepared. That might not bother you, but if you’re pretty conscious of that sort of thing, it’s a note to keep in mind before you buy.
Nike Free RN Flyknit 2018 – Conclusion
Ultimately, we like these 2018 Nikes. They aren’t the perfect shoes, but they look good and they feel good for the most part, though that has to do with what you prefer in terms of feel. We think they’re pretty pricey for what they are, but we also think they perform well for what they are.
