This is simply a preview of the Purple 4.0 bed. We will update this page with more details and commentary after we’ve had another week or so to test the bed.
One of largest concerns with the Original Purple Mattress was that it didn’t offer enough support for particularly heavy individuals. Purple 4.0 aims to change that. In this post we will detail everything from shipping to responsiveness and temperature regulation to support. Also, keep in mind that this is more of a preview since we need a lot of time with Purple.4 in order to 100% confirm a lot of our initial thoughts. We’ll add more detail over the coming weeks.

Purple.4 Mattress Review – Policy Info
Like most online mattress brands, Purple offers free shipping. With the Purple.4, however, because it’s an especially heavy mattress they couldn’t ship the bed via FedEx like they do with the Original Purple. Instead, Purple.4 comes with free white glove delivery, which essentially means a local delivery firm will bring it by your house and set it up for you. This also ensures that you don’t throw your back out trying to setup your brand new mattress. It’s probably a good move, but it’s going to be a little less convenient than FedEx.
Purple also offers free returns and a 100-night risk-free trial where you can test the bed for yourself. If you decide to keep it, that’s great. It comes with a 10-year warranty. If you opt out of keeping Purple.4—and you’re still within the 100-night trial period—you can return the bed for a full refund. They’ll even send someone to your house to pick up and remove the bed at no extra charge to you. This is all standard for the industry, but it definitely makes it hard to not try out a new bed.
Purple 4.0 Mattress Review – Construction of the Bed
Like Purple 2, Purple 4 uses 7.5″ pocketed coils as its main support system. Essentially, Purple took out the support foam from the Original Purple Mattress and replaced it with individually-encased coils. The idea here is that the coils will provide greater support, improved air flow, and increase the useful life of the mattress. The latter two points are in theory, but there’s no doubt that the coils grant the bed a lot more support than did the polyurethane foam. Here’s a sideview of the construction of Purple 4.
While the coils are new, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer material is really the star of the show. After all, that’s where Purple gets its name. In the picture above, the top purple layer is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. It’s like gel, but it’s not gel. It offers notably great pressure relief, but still provides plenty of support. It really has an interesting feel, but we are big fans of it. Below is a GIF that shows at a small scale what the Hyper-Elastic Polymer is like.
As you might have guessed, Purple.4 uses 4″ of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer material. That means it has twice the thickness of the layer on the Original Purple and Purple 2. The reason Purple is offering a model with such a thick slab of Hyper-Elastic Polymer is that they’re trying to accommodate even heavier individuals. Having a thicker layer means if you’re overweight or just heavy in general, you’ll have an option with Purple. A 2″ layer just simply might not be thick enough for you.
Purple 4 Review – Feel and Comfort
We’ll do our best with this part, but will definitely update it as we go. I don’t want to get out over my skis trying to describe the feel of the bed when I need a lot more time to firm up my opinion. Having said that—and using the Original Purple Mattress as a guide—the bed so far has a really nice balance between support, comfort and pressure relief. It conforms to your body around your shoulders, but still keeps its shape around your hips where you don’t want too much sag.
We’re expecting the Purple 4 to be around a 4-5 on the soft to firm scale, meaning it will accommodate all types of sleepers, but will feel firmer to lighter individual and softer to a heavier person. In general though, we think it will be mostly ideal for side sleepers. Again, we’ll add more details here when we feel ready.
Purple 4.0 Mattress – Temperature
This is an area where I do feel pretty comfortable giving my opinion. This is based a lot on my experience with the OG Purple Mattress, but the Purple 4 bed will sleep cool. It will not, however, feel cool to the touch like certain beds. It’s quite interesting how Purple manages to keep the bed neutral in temperature. It doesn’t heat up nor does it make you shiver. If, however, you’re looking for a cool-to-the-touch bed, you should check out Nest Alexander Luxury Contour and Brooklyn Bedding Aurora.
Purple4 Mattress Review – Motion Transfer
This will be an area that we spend a lot of time considering and testing. Since Purple has taken out the foam base, we do expect there to be more motion transfer with Purple.4. This would be consistent with what we’ve seen from most hybrid mattresses. They tend to be far better than typical or traditional innerspring beds, but less efficient with limiting motion than an all-foam mattress. We will definitely look at this more critically over the next few weeks.

What about edge support and responsiveness with Purple 4?
Purple specifically looked at edge support in the design of their new mattresses. They’ve actually added an outer ring of foam around the bed to act somewhat like a bumper so that you don’t get a ‘roll off’ sensation near the edges. Edge support isn’t something that you’d necessarily know to think of when looking for a new bed, but it can be really important to couples that are sleeping on a smaller mattress such as a queen or full. The additional edge support on Purple.4 will end up being a nice upgrade.
As for responsiveness—like temperature regulation—we feel like we’ve got a good idea of what you should expect here. Responsiveness is immediate such that you never have trouble switching positions at night. Yes, the bed offers pressure relief, but you won’t end up stuck in the mattress like you will with older memory foam beds. We’ll spend more time testing the responsiveness, but it will be immediate thanks to the coils and Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
Purple 4 Price & Promo Code
Purple almost never offers proper discount codes on their beds. They often do, however, run specials that bundle accessories in with your purchase of a mattress. You can check here for current Purple promotions and specials. Below is a pricing breakdown for Purple.4. You’ve been warned, this bed is not for the cash-strapped millennial that just graduated from Chico State. You’re going to need a few years of wealth accumulation to pay up for Purple.4.
I told you. That’s not normal bed-in-a-box pricing there. As good as this mattress is probably going to be, the price is going to be a serious deterrent for a lot of people. The way I see it, if you’re going to get Purple 4 you need to be heavy and flush with cash (so essentially an NFL linebacker).
Purple 4 Mattress Review – Verdict
I’ll come back and add more info here, but what I can say for now is that there’s a lot to like about this bed, but I think the price is going to ruin it for a lot of people. We shall see, however.

How heavy is the Purple 4 Mattress?
Weights range from 105LB for a Twin XL to 203LB for a King, so in other words, heavy.
What bed frame or platform can you put Purple 4 on?
Most sturdy, rigid bed frames will work with Purple 4, assuming they can manage the weight. Additionally, as you’d expect Purple.4 will work with the Purple Platform Base or Purple PowerBase, which is an adjustable base.
To where does Purple offer free shipping?
They offer free shipping inside the contiguous 48 states within the US. They charge an additional fee to ship to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.
How does Purple 4 compare to Purple 3 and Purple 2?
Purple 3 and Purple 2 have 3″ and 2″ respectively of Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This, of course, affects the weight, thickness, price, and feel of the mattress, but for the most part, the difference is the thickness of top layer.
What kind of sheets or mattress protector should you use with Purple 4?
Purple does sell their own sheets, but in reality you don’t need anything special with Purple4. Just make sure the sheets are super stretchy because they’ll need to fit around a fairly thick, burly mattress. Also, you might want to opt for a thinner mattress protector if you get one. A thick mattress protector might impact how the bed feels to you.
How do I clean Purple 4?
Like most online beds, you’ll want to spot clean Purple 4. The cover is not machine washable, unfortunately, however it is removable.
