Saatva is one of the more well-known online mattress companies out there. The company was founded in 2010 and has since grown like crazy generating over $200 million in sales in 2017. They are known for their eco-friendly materials and diverse product line. Today though, we’ll be focusing on the Saatva luxury mattress, which is still their flagship bed.
Saatva Mattress Review: Shipping, Trial Period and Warranty
Like most online mattress companies, Saatva offers free shipping and returns. However, unlike most bed in a box companies, the mattress doesn’t arrive compressed in a box. Instead, Saatva offers free white glove delivery. That means an actual person will deliver the mattress and help you get it setup. And if you want, they will even remove your old mattress so you don’t have to make a run to Goodwill. Once the mattress is all setup, Saatva gives you a 120 night home trial. If you decide you don’t like the bed at any point during the trial period, just give the company a call and they will send someone to come it up from your home or apartment free of charge and issue you a full refund. Saatva also backs the mattress with a 15 year warranty. In the first two years of ownership, Saatva will replace the mattress no questions asked if any material defects are found. In years 3-15, Saatva will repair or re-cover the mattress but you have to pay the shipping fee each way.
It’s also important to note that the Saatva luxury mattress comes in a few different models. First, you can choose the feel you want – Plush Soft, Luxury Firm and Firm. Luxury firm is their best seller – they state on their website that over 80% of people favor this model. And that’s the model we tested so that’s what we will primarily be referring to throughout the review. Saatva also lets you choose the height of the mattress. You can choose between the 11.5″ custom slim model and the 14.5″ premier luxury model. Saatva states the two options feel identical though – the difference is purely for aesthetic purposes.
Saatva Bed Review: Construction and Layers
Saatva takes a different approach than most other online mattress companies in that their bed incorporates multiple layers of coils. The Saatva luxury mattress starts with a steel coil base support system that gives the bed a solid, durable foundation. Sitting on top of the steel coils is a layer of individually wrapped comfort coils. These coils are closer to the top of the mattress obviously and give the bed a little bounce. Having the coils near the top also gives the bed strong bi-directional support meaning the coils are able to contour to your body’s shape while also providing a little push-back. On top of all the coils is a layer of memory foam. This is supposed to give the bed some pressure relief and relieve tension from your lower back. Encasing the entire mattress is Saatva’s dual perimeter foam edge support system. This gives the edges of the bed some structural support and helps prevent sagging. The mattress also comes with a euro pillow top and an organic cotton cover. Euro pillow tops add more cushioning than traditional pillow tops and the extra padding is added underneath the outer covering.
We like that Saatva uses organic materials and the bed looks nice but it just kind of reminds of me of an old-school looking innerspring mattress. Not that there’s anything wrong that and really who cares anyways since you’ll be covering the bed with sheets anyways. The cover is non-removable though so if you happen to spill something on the mattress or have a little accident, you’ll just have to spot clean it with a mild detergent and water. That’s how you clean most mattresses even if the cover is removable so no big deal there.
Saatva Review: Overall Feel, Firmness and Sleeper Type
The Saatva luxury mattress incorporates multiple layers of coils and as such, the bed has that typical innerspring feel, which a lot of people actually prefer. So as you can imagine, the Saatva luxury mattress is not all that soft and inviting. I’ve come across plenty of people who don’t really like that soft foam feel that a lot of online mattresses have these days so I can see why Saatva has done so well in recent years. Personally, I like my mattress to be a little more soft and accommodating but to each his own I guess. One thing that all people can appreciate though is the level of support the Saatva mattress provides. We give the luxury firm model a 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. I’d personally give it around a 6 but I weigh around 180 pounds. Someone that’s a little heavier might find it be more like a 5.5, while a more petite person might find it closer to a 6.5.
Regardless, this bed is best for back and stomach sleepers. There’s pretty much no sinkage whatsoever and you always feel as if you’re on top of the mattress. The coils do a good job of keeping your spine in alignment. I’d also like to add that this mattress is a great option for heavier individuals (250+ pounds) due to the support and durability. The luxury firm model will also work for combo sleepers (i.e. people who rotate between their back, stomach and side throughout the night) as long as you spend less than ~15-20% of your time on your side. And that’s because we think the luxury firm model just doesn’t offer enough pressure relief for side sleepers. When you’re on your side, the mattress does a good job with support, it just doesn’t contour to your hips/trunk and shoulders very well. If you’re a strict side sleeper and you like innerspring feel, I’d say go with the plush soft model. Saatva states this model hugs your body as you sleep. On the flip side, if you’re a strict back sleeper and really need extra lumbar support, you may consider going with the firm model. However, I’d only go with this model if your doctor, chiropractor, etc. recommends you do – it’s going to be pretty firm.
Saatva Premium Mattress Review: Temperature Regulation
The Saatva luxury mattress is not cool to the touch but since it incorporates multiple layers of coils, we feel the mattress does a pretty good job with regulating airflow. Still, we wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a top notch cooling mattress. We’d say it’s temperature neutral. The mattress won’t sleep hot but it also doesn’t sleep particularly cool either. Most of the mattresses we test are in this category so it’s not a knock by any means. There’s only been a handful of mattresses that we have tested where the bed is cool to the touch and you actually sleep cool throughout the night.

Saatva Mattress: Motion Transfer
I was expecting the Saatva luxury mattress to perform poorly in terms of limiting motion transfer but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Typically, all-foam beds deaden movement a little better than innerspring beds but I guess the layer of memory foam and the euro pillow top help out the Saatva mattress. In our test, we placed a half-full glass of water one end of the bed and then started rolling/walking around the glass and the water only sloshed around a little bit. We were expecting the glass to almost fall over but it never even came close. It’s still not the best mattress we’ve ever tested in this regard but it’s good enough to where I don’t think you’ll have any issues if you or your partner move around a lot in your sleep.
Saatva Mattress Review: Responsiveness and Edge Support
As you would expect with an innerspring bed, the Saatva mattress is very responsive. The mattress pops back to its original shape immediately after releasing pressure. This means that you’ll find it quite easy to switch between sleeping positions throughout the night. With mattresses that aren’t quite as responsive, you’ll find it requires extra effort to switch from your back to your stomach or vice versa, possibly interrupting your sleep cycle. Generally, responsiveness is also an indicator of long-term mattress durability so Saatva earns a high grade here for sure.
Saatva also performs extremely well in terms of edge support. The foam encased perimeter definitely does its job. When you sit or lay near the edge, the bed barely compresses and you don’t get that roll-off sensation like you get with a lot of bed in a box mattresses out there. In fact, I’d say the Saatva luxury mattress is one of the best beds we’ve tested in this department. Edge support is an important area for couples who share a smaller size bed because a lot of times you’ll find your partner sort of pushing you towards the edge. As such, it’s important the edges are able to provide the necessary support.
Saatva Mattress: Price and Coupon Code
Although Saatva markets this as a luxury bed, it doesn’t come with a luxury price tag. Given the quality of materials, it’s actually quite affordable. In fact, it’s actually more affordable than a lot of all-foam bed in a box mattresses out there. Here’s how it breaks down:
|California King||$1,599||72" x 84"|
|King||$1,599||76" x 80"|
|Queen||$1,199||60" x 80"|
|Full||$1,049||54" x 75"|
|Twin XL||$799||38" x 80"|
|Twin||$699||38" x 75"|
Unfortunately though, Saatva doesn’t offer a ton of coupon codes or promo codes [check for lowest Saatva price].
Saatva Mattress Verdict
The Saatva luxury mattress isn’t our favorite bed but that’s just because we prefer a soft, foam feel. If you like the traditional innerspring feel and you’re a back and stomach sleeper, this mattress is a great option.
Frequently Asked Questions About The Saatva Luxury Mattress:
Will The Saatva Mattress Work With Your Existing Bed Frame?
Of course, Saatva recommends you use their entire system (mattress, foundation, etc.) but your existing box spring and foundation will work just fine as long as it’s sturdy and in good condition.
Is The Saatva Mattress 100% Organic?
No, but Saatva incorporates eco-friendly foams that use at least 30% soy or corn oil. Saatva also uses recycled steel, plant-based natural thistle and organic cotton covering.
What makes Up The 3″ Height Difference In Models Offered?
The difference in height is in the lower steel base coil unit. The 11.5″ model has two less turns than the 14.5″ model. The feel of the mattress is still the same. The difference is purely for looks.
