- 360 degrees of sound
- Very durable
- Waterproof (1m for 30 minutes)
- Great battery life (~11 hours)
- Gesture system for skipping tracks isn’t that efficient
- Bass could be deeper
The UE BOOM 2 is quite possibly the best mid-range speaker on the market right now.
The UE BOOM 2 is Jeff’s daily driver as far as Bluetooth speakers go. He actually used the UE BOOM before that. Safe to say he (and we) like the BOOM series. In terms of changes, the BOOM 2 has added gesture controls—so now you can tap to pause, double-tap to skip tracks, etc., which we do like, but it’s still not as efficient or reliable as buttons.
The design has largely remained unchained with the BOOM . It’s rugged and portable, exactly what we’re looking for in a Bluetooth speaker. It has the same footprint as the Echo Dot and it does a great job of dispersing sound throughout the room. We also really like the sound quality. Solid mids and highs with very little distortion even at the higher volumes. Bass could be deeper, but it’s not bad. The first-gen was water resistant but the UE BOOM 2 takes it a step further and is now IPX7 certified (meaning it can be submerged down to 1 meter for 30 minutes). It gets around 11-12 hours of battery life and charges via MicroUSB and, this is really nice, UE allows you to link the BOOM 2 to another BOOM through the app, which is an awesome feature.
The BOOM 2 retails for $200 (i.e. too pricey), but we’ve also seen it dip down to the $120-$150 range and if you can get it for that, we say that’s a steal. So overall we have been really impressed with the BOOM 2. UE made some nice improvements year-over-year and it is a great mid-range bluetooth speaker. Definitely worth checking out.
