The VAUX Speaker for your Amazon Echo Dot is a no-brainer pickup. Anyone with an Echo Dot should consider getting one.
Let me start this by saying that Amazon has revolutionized the music industry with the Echo series of smart speakers. In fact, the single most common command with an Echo speaker is for it to play music. I personally have Alexa play music nearly every time I’m in my kitchen. It’s easy to do and Amazon has a massive library of free songs for Prime members. The biggest issue, however, with the Echo and Echo Dot is how they sound. Sure, the Echo gets loud, but it sounds lousy. The Echo Dot both sound terrible and is quiet. Not to mention both are wired (i.e. not portable). Enter the Ninety7 VAUX Portable Speaker for Echo Dot. This clever speaker is around $50 [check price on Amazon] and it changes the game for the Echo Dot [check price on Amazon], making it sound vastly better, 3x louder (if not more), and portable. Get this, if you buy one VAUX Speaker and one Echo Dot, that’s still $80 cheaper than the MSRP of the larger Echo. Why would anyone ever get the larger Echo then?
VAUX Speaker Review — Main Features
The VAUX Speaker is simple. It’s an elegant speaker with a mesh fabric weave outside and a built-in shelf that lets your Echo Dot sit flush with the top of the speaker, allowing you to still access all of the Echo Dot’s buttons. The VAUX Speaker has an AUX cable and MicroUSB cable that plug into your Echo Dot—those cables are hidden within the speaker so that the outside is flush and cable-free. It really is a very nice system. And you do not need to sync your Echo Dot to speaker since it’s plugged in via the AUX port. You can still even use the Echo Dot with other Bluetooth speakers if you’re inclined. In other words, the fact the Echo Dot is plugged into the VAUX Speaker at all times does not get in the way of you being able to use it with other wireless speakers.
Once you have you have the Echo Dot set in the speaker, you can choose to keep the VAUX plugged in via MicroUSB or use it as a portable speaker, which in our tests will last about 6.5 hours on a single charge. Not great battery life, but not bad. What that means is that now not only is your Echo Dot louder and sounds better, but you’ve also got a portable Alexa smart speaker. You’ve got the loudness of the larger Echo and the portability of the Amazon Tap. We have not encountered a single issue with the VAUX Speaker and feel that it is very likely the single best accessory for the Echo Dot.
