The Zinus Green Tea Mattress is very basic but it’s affordable price point makes it an attractive option.
UPDATE: We have launched a new mattress focused website. Please click here to see the updated version of this review on myslumberyard.com.
Like with most bed in a box companies, Zinus offers free shipping. The mattress will arrive compressed at your door in a medium size box. From there, Zinus offers a 100 night risk free trial. That means if you decide the mattress isn’t for you during that time period, just give the company a call, they’ll refund your money and send someone to pick it up free of charge. They also back their mattresses with a 10 year warranty. Now Zinus offers a variety of different mattresses and bedding products, but today we’ll be focusing on their best selling 12″ Green Tea Mattress.
Zinus Green Tea Mattress Construction
The 12″ Zinus Green Tea mattress is comprised of various levels of foam. On the bottom, you have a 3.5″ layer of support foam. On top of that is another layer of 3.5″ high density foam. On top of that is a 2″ layer of comfort foam and then on top is a 3″ layer of memory foam. Look, the construction of this bed won’t wow you – there’s really nothing special about it. It’s just a basic bed but the price tag definitely reflects that.
For the cover, Zinus went with a knitted jacquard fabric. It’s a pretty basic cover as well – no bells and whistles. It’s soft and comfortable but it is a little loose but I guess that isn’t a huge deal once you put sheets on the bed. Like with most bed in a box mattresses, it’s not recommended you machine wash the cover. Instead, if it happens to get dirty, just spot clean it with a mild detergent.
Overall Feel, Softness & Coolness
This bed definitely has that traditional memory foam feel, which may or may not be preferable – just depends on personal preference. It’s very soft and very comfortable, but when you lay on it you sink in quite a bit. You’ve probably heard people talk about that stuck-in-the-mud feeling – well, that’s what you get with the Green Tea mattress from Zinus. Now some people love that feeling. For example, D. Payne our video editor, loves that feeling and really enjoyed this mattress. Other people, like me, want a mattress with more support. Overall, we’d give it a 4/10 on our soft-to-firm scale, which is the softest score we’ve given out of the 20+ mattresses we’ve tested.
As such, we see this bed being better for side sleepers. If you really like your pressure points (shoulders, hips, etc.) being cradled by soft memory foam, this bed will definitely provide that. However, if you’re primarily a back or stomach sleeper, we’re not sure so sure the Green Tea mattress provides enough support, especially if you’re over about 230 pounds.
Now the issue with a lot of memory foam beds is that they aren’t the best when it comes to temperature regulation and keeping you cool as you sleep. That’s why you see a lot of companies out there use latex foam, blended foams or some sort of proprietary blend. Zinus tried to do their best to by incorporating egg crate foam to help with air flow but it’s just not enough. The Green Tea mattress just sleeps a little hotter than most other beds we’ve tested. But considering it’s price tag, I’m not so sure that will deter too many people.

Motion Transfer / Responsiveness
On the positive side, the Green Tea mattress performs extremely well when it comes to limiting motion transfer. It passed our test with no problem. I don’t think you’ll have any issues waking up in the middle of the night if your partner moves around or gets up a lot during the middle of the night.
As far as responsiveness, that top layer is proper memory foam so it takes a second or two to fully regain its shape after releasing pressure. We would recommend rotating this mattress every 4-6 months to prevent sinkage and help prolong its life.
Now we get to the most attractive thing about this bed – it’s price point. Zinus is extremely affordable. It’s about $400-700 cheaper than the average bed in a box. Here’s the breakdown:
But those are just the MSRPs. Amazon is almost always running some sort of sale or discount on these mattresses. Plus, Zinus also offers different thickness models (8″, 10″, etc.) which you can find even cheaper.
Bottom line with this bed – it’s very basic but it’s still very comfortable and good at limiting motion transfer. It wouldn’t my first choice to sleep on every night but we’re viewing this mattress more as the perfect guest room bed – it will get the job done when your in-laws are in town for a few nights. Or if you’re on a tight budget, it’s hard to find a better mattress for the price.
